18 students of the class of 2018 were chosen to be part of the 10th-grade Innovation Academy program. I had the luck to be one of them.

I’m Daniela Ontaneda Zimmermann, a perfectionist Roosevelt student currently taking the IB diploma program while trying to keep some of my hair from falling.

COURSES

"At the heart of the academy is our interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students take three courses with the same cohort in order to collaborate continuously, all taught by the same instructor to ensure more customized learning"

"Our purpose is to help students find theirs."

PURPOSE

PROJECTS

Everything we learn, we apply. From publishing magazines and delivering TED Talks, to creating marketing campaigns for NGOs and starting our own companies, we believe that deep learning happens when it's relevant and applicable.

THE DEEP DIVE

What does it mean to have depth? To write with depth? Capture a moment in depth? To research and know a topic in depth?

These are the questions at the heart of the first unit we, 10th graders, explored. Our end product was a photography exhibition that raised awareness about a local issue here in Lima, Peru.

MY LOCAL ISSUE: TEENAGE PREGNANCY

My topic being teenage pregnancy, I decided to photograph teen moms. It wasn’t easy asking nor convincing the “hermana Andrea” to let us take and expose the photos-— they’re underage after all. We sat down with her and Mr. Bon, had a deep chat and came up with an agreement: In the inauguration, we were allowed to leave the pictures with their eyes uncovered, but for the rest of the time the pictures were up, we would cover the girls' eyes.
